Growth of the Black Pearl Industry in Western Australia

The granting of 10 new operating permits now brings the total number of pearl farms producing black pearls in Western Australia to 28.
According to state government forecasts, revenues generated by this sector are expected to reach between 10 and 20 million Australian dollars in a single year, and for the Shark Bay region alone, around AUD 200 million over the next ten years.
Peter Morgan, one of the pioneers of black pearl production in Shark Bay, believes that Western Australia could soon rival the major pearl-producing nations of Oceania.
